She is Beauty but is he the Beast? THE SNOW BRIDE

She is Beauty, but is he the Beast?

THE SNOW BRIDE (THE KNIGHT AND THE WITCH 1) https://amzn.to/2MZZan0

Excerpt 2

A woman of my own. Someone to return to.
Alice cared and had urged him most ardently to stay with her and Peter, but pride had made him refuse them both with a smile. He did not begrudge the handsome couple their joy, not after their many trials. But the dark of winter and Christmas especially brought his own desolation home to him most keenly, sharper than an assassin’s blade. He was nine and twenty, a grizzled warrior, battle-scarred and wounded.
Feeling sorry for yourself, Magnus? Brace up, man! Be a Viking, as your granddad was. You have your wits and your balls, all working. The lasses in the stews make no complaint and do not charge so much. You have land, a strong house, good fellowship, and two hearty godchildren.
“Splendor in Christendom, let me have my own family! A lass who loves me!”
His voice rang out, startling a lone magpie into taking flight from a solitary elm in a blur of wings, but the drab and well-worn saint gave no sign of hearing. Peering into the calm, carved face, Magnus wondered if the saint was smiling, and then he spotted his own reflection, clear in a frozen mirror of ice by the shrine.
He scowled, knowing very well what he looked like, and spat to the left for luck. With his knees creaking, he staggered to his feet and remounted his eager horse. When he passed this way again he would leave gold, he vowed, but for now he wished only to slink away. He needed to find the village before nightfall and speak to the council of old men—it was always old men—who had sent word to his manor of Norton Mayfield, begging for help, any help, to track and to defeat a monster.

The Knight and the Witch Series - with new reviews

THE SNOW BRIDE (THE KNIGHT AND THE WITCH 1) https://amzn.to/2MZZan0

Blurb:

England, winter, 1131

Elfrida, spirited, caring and beautiful, is also alone. She is the witch of the woods and no man dares to ask for her hand in marriage until a beast comes stalking brides and steals away her sister. Desperate, the lovely Elfrida offers herself as a sacrifice, as bridal bait, and she is seized by a man with fearful scars. Is he the beast?

In the depths of a frozen midwinter, in the heart of the woodland, Sir Magnus, battle-hardened knight of the Crusades, searches ceaselessly for three missing brides, pitting his wits and weapons against a nameless stalker of the snowy forest. Disfigured and hideously scarred, Magnus has finished with love, he thinks, until he rescues a fourth 'bride', the beautiful, red-haired Elfrida, whose innocent touch ignites in him a fierce passion that satisfies his deepest yearnings and darkest desires.

 Review:

The Snow Bride delivers a thrilling tale of magic, adventure, and love.

I adored Magnus!!  I loved how he was not the flashy knight-in-shining-armor, but instead was battle-scarred and weary, was someone who's proved himself and could be counted on to keep fighting through any and every battle.  He desperately sought after a seemingly unattainable dream and watching him realize Elfrida was his dream come to life - what he wished for and then more - melted my heart.  The gentleness he showed Elfrida balanced wonderfully with his protectiveness that flared around her.

Elfrida had a heart that overflowed with devotion and compassion, even as much as she struggled to truly find her place.  She had a special kind of wisdom and a stubborn tenacity that saw her through her journey, and afforded her the opportunity to learn that she wasn't on her own fighting battles anymore.

I enjoyed watching the two of them learn to compromise and trust each other - which was very much a challenge with their temperaments and instincts.  Their ability to communicate and make reparations quickly also showed strength and confidence.  Their strengths played well off the other, even if sometimes you were wanting to join the other in shaking someone... haha.

If you enjoy a adventure story filled with knightly brawn and magical good-vs-evil, this is a fantastic story to snuggle up with on the long, dark winter nights.

EXCERPT

Before Magnus could move away from the shadows, Elfrida seized his arm. “I must come with you, sir. You and I alone, I think, until we are sure we have found Silvester’s lair.”     “Indeed?”
She did not quail under his frown though it was a near thing. “Please,” she almost said, but she was done with begging.
“I have a plan,” she began as he shifted. When he strode into the sunlight, the rest of her words withered inside her mouth.     He hooked his hand into his belt. “I will not have you as bait.”
He understood part of her idea, then. This would be only gossip-bait, she wanted to say, but Magnus’s growl stopped her.
“So small you are,” he said. “So slender, still. If I were only more a man, this caper of yours would be impossible.” His fingers whitened on his belt and he fell silent.
“What?” Magnus’s frustration raked through Elfrida’s mind like claws. As she stared at him, horrified, he jerked his head aside, checking no one was close. Her own feelings now raging, and even with all her magic she could not sense the rest of his thought. That was always the difficulty with magic and  thought sensing. She needed a cool, calm head to do such things and at present her thoughts and feelings were in tumult, with fear uppermost.
“My lord?” What does he mean? “Please, Magnus.”
They marched across the yard in the same arrow-straight diagonal that Tancred had taken toward the steps of the great hall. Magnus snatched her hand and veered left to the stables, acknowledging the smith coming the other way.
     “Are we leaving?” she ventured.
     “Let me think.”

Here is an excerpt from the opening chapter:

England, summer, 1132

“I am the troll king of this land and you owe me a forfeit.”

Elfrida glanced behind the shadowed figure who barred her way. He was alone, but then so was she.

Do I turn and run along the track? Should I flee into the woods or back to the river? He is close, less than the distance of the cast of a spear. Can I make it hard for him to catch me? Yes.

But catch her he would.

Play for time.

“Indeed?” she asked, using one of her husband’s favorite expressions, then sharpened her tone. “Why must I pay anything?”

“You have trespassed in these woods. In my woods.”

The nagging ache in her shoulders and hands vanished in a tingling rush of anticipation. Elfrida dropped her basket of washed, dried clothes onto the dusty pathway, the better to fight. “King Henry is lord of England.”

“I am king here.”

A point to him. “I kept to the path, and then the river.”

“That may be so, but I claim a kiss.”

He had not moved yet, nor shown his face. The summer evening made his shadow huge, bloody. Her heart beating harder as she anticipated their final, delicious encounter, Elfrida asked, “Are you so bold? My husband is a mighty warrior, the greatest in all Christendom.”

“That is a large claim.” He sounded amused. “All Christendom? He must be a splendid fellow. The harpers should sing of him.”

Elfrida raised her chin, determined to have her say. “I am proud of my lord. He is a crusader. He has seen Jerusalem and he has learning. He can whistle any tune. He defends all those weaker than himself.” Should I say what I next want to say? Tease him as he has teased me? Why not? Are we are not playing? “Go back to your woods, troll king.”

She heard the crack of a pine cone as he shifted. In a haze of motion the troll king was out of the tree shade and into the bright sunset, dominating the path in front of her. Taller than a spear, broad as a door, he had a face as stark as granite, of weathered, broken stone. Heavily scarred—many would say grooved—he had the terrible beauty of a victor, a winner wounded but unbowed.

A ribbon of heat, like hot breath, flickered across her breasts. He was so magnificent , so handsome. She both loved and hated defying him, even in jest. Striving for calm, she said, “You will come no closer.”

“Or what, little laundress?”

That tease irked her. “The clothes and bedding do not wash themselves. Not even for you, troll king.”

He smiled, a daunting unfurling of that scarred, sword-cut face. The churning heat in her belly swept up into her cheeks and down to her loins.

“I am a witch, besides,” she added, though not as coolly as she would have liked. She saw the gleam in his large brown eyes pool into molten bronze.

“You would put a spell on me, elfling?” he challenged.

“Perhaps I already have.” Her tone and mouth were as dry as the summer. How much farther can we stretch this sweet foolishness?

He raised thick black eyebrows, while a breeze flicked and flirted with his shoulder-length curls. “Is that Christian?”

She wanted to cross her arms before herself, to shield her body from his bold stare. At the same time she longed to strip herself naked for him, unlace his tunic and caress him. Unsure how he might react, she armed herself with words instead. “I am a good witch, Magnus.”

“Indeed.” Again he looked her up and down, glanced at her buckets, basket, and clothes. “Should you not have an escort, wife?”

Do I tell him I sent Piers off to help? Are we still playing now or is he truly angry?

Looming over her, he was close enough for her to touch him. To caress his strong body will be like stroking sun-warmed stone. Distracted, she shook her head. “There is the sheep shearing…”

“Done.” He tossed a stack of rolled, lanolin-scented fleeces at her feet. “I did my share and more and, as I have said already, I claim a reward.”

He winked at her and she found herself smiling in return. “Forfeit and reward, too, sire? Is that not greedy?”

“Are we in Lent, that I should fast?” He raised his hand, cupping her face with supple fingers. “But you are too dainty to linger alone, witch or no.”

He traced the curve of her lips with his thumb and, as she trembled, he gathered her firmly into his arms. “Any man will try to spirit you away.”

“Hush!” She made a sign against the evil eye and wood elves, but he shook his head at her caution.

“I have faith in your magic craft, Elfrida. But a passing knave or outlaw? He is quite another matter. He would see you as a tempting piece, my wife, my lovely.”

“I am not helpless,” she protested, but her heart soared at his loving words. His mouth, as crooked and scarred as the rest of his face, stole a kiss from hers.

He smelled of lanolin, salt, and summer green-stuff, and tasted of apples and himself. Elfrida closed her eyes under his tender onslaught, her thighs trembling.

“Troll King?” she murmured, when they broke apart slightly. “Is that how you wish me to address you in the future, husband?”

“‘Sire’ will do, or ‘greatest knight in Christendom.’ Those will do very well.” He kissed her again.

“You rob me, sire,” she murmured, a breathless space later.

“Of kisses?” He sounded delighted at the idea, the beast, and grinned when she pinched him.

“Even one-handed I can do that better than you.”

He demonstrated, squeezing and lightly slapping her bottom, chuckling as she thrust her hips back against his fondling fingers. A shred of modesty remained as her wits dissolved into a sweet blaze of need. “Magnus, what if someone comes?”

“So, who’s this Toby guy again?” Gideon interrupted, still standing next to her.
“He’s my personal assistant.”
Gideon crossed his arms over his chest. “Mmhmm, and what exactly does he assist you with?”
Ireland held in a smug grin. He looked too cute with his eyes narrowed. “Aw, is somebody jealous?”
He straightened. “No.”
Teasing him was much too easy. “That’s too bad.” She fanned herself dramatically. “He’s just my type too.”
“So am I.”
Ireland laughed and cocked her head to the right. “Who says you’re my type? Just because we dated doesn’t mean you’re my type anymore.”
Gideon stepped closer and he lowered his voice. “If your reaction from the kiss the other day—”
“It was just a kiss.”
He didn’t budge, but his eyes showed her statement wounded him. “Then do it again.”
“Wh-what?”
“Kiss me again,” he dared.
Ireland’s stance wobbled. “Why would I do that?”
Gideon smirked, the act sexier than any other she’d seen on him before. “To prove you like kissing me. Oh, and that I’m still your type, whether or not you want to admit it.”
Ireland stared into his eyes, digesting his words at the terrifying truth. She had liked kissing him the other day. She’d always liked kissing him. Locking lips with Gideon wasn’t a problem. Falling for him was. She couldn’t afford to do it again, no matter how badly she wanted to.
He leaned toward her, but only to grab a napkin from the table before the breeze threw it to the grass. She heard her sharp intake of breath and realized she’d hoped he was leaning in to brush his lips to hers.
Gideon chuckled and winked. “Don’t fight it, darlin’,” he said, then took a seat next to Zavier.

"First Crush, Last Love," Contemporary Romance by Elizabeth McKenna

Remember your first crush? How your heart raced and your cheeks flushed whenever you saw him? Jessie Baxter does, and it’s happening again. Ten years ago, despite her best efforts, Lee Archer wanted to be just friends. Now, he wants more, but Jessie's still recovering from a psycho ex-husband. Can she learn to trust again and make her first crush into her last love?

Elizabeth McKenna’s latest novel will have you remembering the angst of high school, the grief of a failed relationship, and the happiness of true love.

Excerpt

Jessie flipped on the foyer light and her nerves relaxed until she saw the rug at the bottom of the stairs. It was askew. Her eyes darted over the space in front of her. Everything else was in its proper place. Besides the inability to pick faithful husbands, she and her mother shared the rarely appreciated trait of compulsive neatness.
She thought back to when she had left the house earlier. Maybe in her haste to meet Sarah, her foot had slid the rug out of place as she came down the stairs. But she would have straightened it. Unless she didn’t notice . . . but she would have noticed . . . because that’s how she was.
She inched into the kitchen and picked up the phone. She’d call the police and ask them to search the house. Because of a cockeyed rug? Even in her paranoid state, she knew it would sound crazy. Their first question would be, “How much did you have to drink tonight, Ms. Baxter?”
She shook her head. For all the bravado she showed in front of Lee, here she was acting like a scared twelve-year-old, alone for the first time while her parents were on a date night. Her mom had offered to cancel her trip to London when Jessie told her the date of the class reunion, but Jessie had insisted she go. Since retirement, these trips had become her mom’s main source of entertainment.
She rummaged in her purse until her fingers found her pepper spray. With the canister at arm’s length, she circled each room on the first floor, testing the locks on the windows. Everything seemed in order. She let out a breath and grasped the banister leading upstairs with her free hand while her foot straightened the rug.
The steps to the second floor creaked under Jessie’s weight. She shuddered at the eerie feeling the empty house gave off. Still clutching the pepper spray, she checked the windows upstairs before collapsing on the bed in her childhood room. The house was too big for one person. She didn’t know how her mom stood it. Maybe tomorrow she’d move to Sarah’s. They could have a slumber party like old times.
Old times. Lee Archer. Wow. Her smile turned into a yawn. Something itched at the back of her mind, but after seven hours in a car and a few more in the bars, she gave into heavy eyelids and fell into an uneasy sleep.
At three in the morning, her eyes flew open and she clutched the comforter to her chin.
Underwear. A pair of lacy, black underwear hung from the top rail of the desk’s chair. No way in hell had she done that.

"A Marriage Made in Hell"/"A Wish Under a Yuletide Moon". 2 novellas in ONE YULETIDE KNIGHT

ONE YULETIDE KNIGHT  is part of several Black Friday deals offered by Praire Rose Publications. For Friday November 17 this title is just 99cents!

Deborah's novella, "A Marriage Made in Hell" is the lead in this Yule/Christmas anthology. Here is the blurb for her story, and an excerpt.

Blurb

Essence of the game is deception...

When her half-sister refuses to marry the powerful earl of Hellborne, Greyson de Verre, Lesslyn de Sancerre sees the chance to have a life, a home and a husband of her own, so she agrees to take her sister's place.  Her sister, in turn, is off to elope with the man she has fallen in love with.  Everything appears fated in this pact the two women seal.  What seemed like a logical solution at the time soon becomes a battle to keep ahead of the lies.  Lesslyn quickly learns plots and schemes are easily concocted, but realities arising from the falsehoods are a different matter altogether.  Especially, when she is quickly falling in love with Greyson de Verre...her husband to be.
Commanded to wed by royal decree...

When Edward Plantagenet demands you must marry, you have little options...or do you?  King Edward has commanded that the earl of Hellborne must marry the heiress of Sancerre.  After all a bargain is a bargain—even if the earl views the coming marriage with disdain.  Only, the enigmatic lord of Hellborne needs must wed on Yuletide...so wed he shall...no matter what.
Even if it is a Marriage Made in Hell. . .

Excerpt

Lesslyn stared, her eyes traveling up the long, strong thighs, encased in soft leathern hose, exposed since he wore no surcoat.  The short black habergeon only came to his narrow hips.  Growing lightheaded, the whole incident was taking on a bizarre dream quality.  She tried to swallow, as she stared up at his muscular legs.  If it were a fantasy, then it must be one born of her darkest desires.  How ironic to meet her bridegroom in such a fashion.
He leaned down and locked his hands behind the small of her back.  “Can you link your arms around my neck?”
She was too weak to nod again, instead, she just did as he asked.
He lifted her, until Lesslyn was on her feet––and pressed up against him!  Her body was flush against his very masculine frame; heat off him rolled over her in a wave.  So flooded with the sense of this man, her heart slammed against her ribs.  The unusual, luring scent of his skin was surprisingly intoxicating.  Lesslyn leaned into him, reveling in the tantalizing fragrance.
“Your breath will come.  Trust me.”  His head dipped closer so he could whisper in her ear.  “You might pass out.  Never fear, I shall catch you and keep you safe.”
Lesslyn felt faint, her legs rubbery.  She started to sway.  Suddenly, air returned and she could draw breath again.  Still dizzy, her legs buckled, but as he promised he caught her and held her close.
“See, I told two truths.  Your breath came back and I did not allow you to fall.”  He gave a grin that nearly stopped her heart.
Lesslyn wheezed, her throat still burning.
“Breathe slowly.  Keep your breaths shallow.  Soon, all will be normal.”
Lesslyn tried to offer him a reassuring smile, but her body was focused on blessed air.  She had never understood the necessary function, or how something so natural could be taken from you.  Instead, she gave him a small nod, and lowered her eyes, unable to meet his penetrating stare.
The fear was subsiding, only to be replaced by other powerful emotions.  She was aware of this man, on a level that had never touched her before.  Aware she was offering him a life of lies.  It made her ashamed.
He kissed her cheek, ever so faintly, the touch so light she could almost believe she imagined it.  The moment was spoiled as a chunk of snow fell high from the tree, hitting them both.  Hellborne laughed.  It was a deep, rumbling sound that suddenly made her feel happy.
His eyes narrowed and he tilted her head back, his brow flexing into a frown as he checked her forehead.  His thumb faintly brushed over the sore spot.  “You grow a lump.  Did he hit you?”  He turned his head, watching as they led the man past.  If eyes had the power to kill, the enemy warrior would drop to his death on the spot.
She swallowed hard to push words out.  “Nay...horse...knocked me off.”
The attacker looked worried.  “I was no’ goin’ to harm her.  Wanted the beast, ’tis all...to get away...she stabbed me, she did.”  He raised his bleeding lower arm to show the wound.
“Not harm her?  You forget I blocked your swing as you stood over her.  She was knocked breathless, unable to move.  What?  You lifted your sword against a woman who was flat on her back?”  Fury rode on every word Hellborne spoke.
One of the knights guarding the man held up the knife.  “Your lady is a fighter, I’d say.”
Greyson stepped away from her, though he kept his left hand on her back.  “Knave, want to save your life?  Tell me under whose banner you fought?  Why did you attack this party?”
The man glanced from Hellborne, then to Lesslyn, and then back, buying time before he answered.  Resignation finally lit his eyes.  “No banner, my lord.  We were paid coin—I know not who.  I canno’ give you a name even if I wanted to.”
“What were your orders?
“Just to attack the party and take the woman,” he replied.  At the darkening of Hellborne’s face, he quickly tacked on.  “The command was no’ to harm a hair on her head.  Just take her.”
Hellborne barked, “Take her where?”
“Again, I know not.”
Hellborne held out his right hand for his sword, and his squire quickly passed it to him.

Dawn Thompson is another author in the ONE YULETIDE KNIGHT anthology with her novella, "A Wish Under a Yuletide Moon."

Here is a blurb for Dawn, and an Excerpt.

Blurb

It was under the cold Yuletide moon when Garlon Trivelyan, Knight of the Realm, heard the sirens keen—just before the ship hit Land’s End shoals.  As the galley broke apart, he felt something keeping him afloat in the icy waters, nudging him toward shore.  He suddenly found himself on the beach, his arm deeply wounded.  His blood black under the silver moonlight.  Garlon knew he was dying so he made a wish to live, never remotely believing that final request could be answered.  Too late he recalled the warning: be careful for what you wish.
Annalee, the goddess of the wishing well, heard the mortal’s plea—and answered it.  Now Garlon Trevilyan was trapped in the land of the Fae on the night of Yule, where magic could save a dying man’s life.  But at what price?

Dawn Thompson weaves a spell of wishes granted and the dark consequences of myths and legends, of Auld Gods, Centaurs, Selkies and the strongest power of all—Love.

Excerpt

“I...I...”  Garlon could scarcely form words.  “Who are you?”
“You may call me Analee.  You called upon the goddess Annis, and I answered.  I am the handmaiden of this well.”
Suddenly, the pain in his arm ceased.  Mayhap he was dreaming?
“If the full moon waxes at Yuletide, I am permitted to rise from the pool and take a lover—if he pays the proper tribute.  You gifted me with a sigil ring of gold.  I accept this.”
Surely, this was naught but a night visitation.  Or he had died in the wreck, and this was his torment.  She leaned to him and brushed her cool lips across his.  Strangely, it didn’t feel like a dream.  He could taste the moisture from her mouth.  He hungered for more, desire suddenly roaring through his blood with fire.
“Have I died, then?” he finally asked.
“Nay, I have healed your arm.  You shall live Garlon Trivelyan,” she said
“How do you know my name?”
“I know much, Knight of the Realm,” she returned.  “I have healed you, saved your life.  I have chosen you.  Only, you must come to me of your free will.  I will not compel you to be my lover.”
Overhead, the Yuletide moon peeked out from behind the clouds, the silvery beams almost clinging to her womanly perfection.
As dreams go, this one was surely born of his deepest desires.  Never had he seen a woman so beautiful.
“Arise, Sir Knight,” she said, holding out her hand to him.
