Halloween Inspires My Wilder Nature

All Hallow’s Eve nears, a time when the veil parts and we get a glimpse of the other side, that is, if we desire it... maybe, even if we don’t. There are tons o’ ghost stories out there and other bizarre spooky encounters that people report, including side trips inside another dimension.
For me, this has traditionally been a time when my wilder nature takes over. I’m restless. I want to run untamed over the land. Trick or treating as a kid wasn’t all about the great big bag candy for me, it was the freedom to roam at night with my friends. I felt so fiercely free, instead of caged by school and other civilized expectations.
As an adult I wanted to explore life in larger ways. I burned with recklessness, with a bonfire-like sexuality. And, yep, I always yearned to be more mischievous, to be as naughty as my black cat shifter heroine, Sable Kiki, in
BLACK CAT BEAUTY.
If only... but then, that’s one reason I’m a writer, I get to live the fantasy of *what if*.

From the Halloween Adventures of my Black Cat Beauty ~

Relishing the chance to be in her black cat form, Sable crouched low on her belly, the wet cool leaves of autumn barely noticed. Pricking her ears she listened to the hayride wagon’s approach. She ignored the piercing rumble of the tractor engine, concentrating on the one wheel that softly creaked.
Anticipation and impatience twitched the tip of her tail. If she timed it just right, the fun would be Halloween spooky and cat-tastic Twilight now crept over the farm fields, and, already several of the teenagers sexually giggled. Many of them rubbed against each other, exploring.
Sable feline smiled, then crouched lower, preparing to spring like a demon. Instead of listening, she focused on the rolling vibration of the wagon and the mice smells embedded in the lovely fragrance of the hay. Once the wagon came into sight, she followed the spin of spokes. Tightening her sleek muscles, she waited until the edge of the second wheel appeared.
Sable launched above the wagon. Lengthening her body in mid-flight, she unsheathed her claws for effect and loosed a yowling shriek. One girl screamed bloody murder as Sable lightly landed on a pile of hay.
Immediately, she dashed like a feral black cat around the group of teenagers, scrabbling intentionally over their laps and legs. They froze or jumped in terror. Shrill yelps split the air and the wagon halted with a big jerk.
Zigzagging madly between the freaked out teens, Sable nimbly avoided their panicked swats and frantic kicks. Clumps of hay flew everywhere, then swirled around them like a blizzard.
For more cat grins, Sable seized her opportunity, leaping toward the man driving the tractor. His eyes widened, looking like twin full moons. “What the hell –“
With a plop, Sable landed on top of his wide-brimmed straw hat. Sinking her claws in, she clung for a few moments while he wildly grabbed for her snaking black tail.
Satisfied to her feline core, Sable balanced herself long enough to leap and sail to the safety of a low-hanging limb. Settling herself on a wide branch, she watched the human show below.

Next is a 1,000 word Flash Fiction I wrote recently, inspired by this ‘darker’ time of year when the sun shines less each day.

The Graveyard Dagger ~

The dagger, I must find my family’s ancient dagger or watch everyone I care for perish, die gruesomely at the hands of an old, human-like breed recently loosed from their containment in a deep underground cavern. To live, these creatures with pearl-pale skin tinted by gray, with eyes that can glow blood-red, feed on the blood of my kinsmen. No, not with fangs like a vampire. They slice open a vein and drink greedily from the scarlet fountain or let it fill their strange ornate chalices.
How do I know this? I’m a Seer. I watched it happen in my visions while I silently screamed in horror. Days later, the bodies of the victims were found, drained of all blood. They were my relatives across the pond, who live on the Emerald Ilse.
Buffeting winds knife through me and I clutch my coat tighter as I walk quickly up the long rise of ground. With winter around the corner, the grass has browned in our family’s graveyard, begun in 1801 when we moved to Kentucky.
Swiftly, the mist of our spell swirls around me like haunting apparitions, then reveals what has been kept hidden from the rest of the world. Not only the few graves of my ancestors, but the immense stone vault I must enter in search of the dagger. No, it won’t be so easy as prying open the door. I must summon a power I have never used before.
At a sound, like the scrape of a boot, I whirl. The wind slaps strands of my long hair across my face. I’ve kept it loose, free from any restraint because it increases the strength of my supernatural abilities, so little used in these modern times.
The inane urge to shout ‘who goes there’ purses my mouth as a dark form takes shape and moves toward me. Soon, I see the gait of a man, a tall imposing figure.
Damn, I know him. I shudder inside, then seethe with utter rage, the red boil of my blood before my eyes. His betrayal rises up my throat like bile. I want to scream above the loud moans of the wind, shriek as crazily as a hoyden at him. I want to hurl the largest stone I can find and lift.
“Kharmen.” His voice is like thick smoke and already it spirals through me, a carnal sorcery. “You need me.”
“I never needed you.” Refusing to gaze at him fully, I spin around. “Go away. I don’t want to waste my energies getting rid of you!”
Somehow, he captures my hand from behind, a gentle grasp only. He knows my power if he pushes me beyond reason.
“You need me,” he repeats. “I will add to your magick, as it was before.”
‘As it was before’, his words cut worse than any dagger stabbing into my flesh over and over. Yet, to the truth, he is correct.
“Stand beside me,” I order, then extend my arm toward the vault door. We twine hands in a knot of power. I aim my finger and ‘see’ the dark violet streams strike the copper circlet before they actually burst forth.
As I envision it, so it now occurs. The bolts of violet light explode against the copper and spark magnificently. Suddenly, the vault door blows open, as if sucked free by a tornado.
We enter quickly, our hands still locked. There’s only so much time before it will close again. I wave my palm creating a soft illumination. In my mind’s eye I focus on the appearance of the dagger, knowing that will lead me to it’s location.
“Here!” I pull him toward the ruby-encrusted slender case that sits by itself on top of one altar.
“No!” He hauls me back against his brawny chest, so familiar I heave in breaths of need and fight a heady desire. “Don’t touch it.”
“Why?” I demand.
“Remember, Kharmen,” he intones hypnotically, “remember.”
The fog, of centuries long past, vanishes from my mind and I recall the early teachings of my magickal heritage. Reluctantly, I let the memory surface to its fullest. There must be the touch of Two, a woman and man united by love.
Once we loved. Our savage and wildly beautiful couplings knew no boundaries, the pleasures limited only by the sky itself. Once is all the love I have. I turn, moving within his embrace, an acceptance of what I must do.
“Make it fast.”
The last word barely passes my lips before he is sweeping me against him. His mouth on mine, he seizes the kiss I give him with a raw bold passion that makes me his, once again.
Together, we claim the dagger.
Together, we race from the vault. The fiercer winds blast against our bodies as we run down the hill. Halting, we accept the shelter of the grand oak tree’s large trunk.
Together, we chant the sacred words, opening the ancient case, handmade by the first of us to arrive on Earth.
The crescent-shaped blade of the dagger shimmers beyond the day’s poor gray light. The sheen of gold and silver dances in mesmerizing ripples as we behold our race’s salvation. For, only the dagger’s enchanted blade will pierce the hearts of our enemies destroying them for an eternity.
~~~
“I will never forgive you,” I say, my voice more breath than sound.
“Yes, you will.” Drakayle leans toward me intimately, pressing his forehead to mine and I feel the primal splendor of his power, stronger than it was before.
“I may love you. But I will never forgive you.” The swell of my heart for him should not be, yet it is.
“I will convince you. You will know my worthiness.”
“Worthiness, no,” I challenge. “Necessity, yes, against our enemy.” Desperately, I wish for his lips on mine again.
Torrents of energy from the dagger we hold together act as a barrier against the wind’s whirling force. Inside our own cocoon, our lips meet, caressing each other.
My First Love Affair With a Superhero
My first love affair with a superhero didn’t begin as a kid reading comic books. Although, I will admit I was thoroughly impressed with the first Superman, George Reeves, in the old black and white TV show because he had the power to help people and save them. And because he stood for TRUTH, JUSTICE AND THE AMERICAN WAY. It was his nobility, his goodness and his heroic acts that held my little child’s heart. I still remember to this day that moment when I learned the actor who played Superman had died. It hardly seemed possible.
Yes, I read comic books, the old Archie comics especially ~ yep, I’m that old. However, I quickly grew out of that stage. Actually, it was my youngest brother who always had a superhero comic book in one hand, reading and chuckling and making exclaiming noises, when he wasn’t running around the neighborhood like a true heathen. Tod, my brother, always claimed he learned to read because of comic books. He was a math genius actually, but as a young child he wasn’t motivated to learn how to read, until the exciting adventure-landia of those worlds.
Me? I fell in love with Superman the instant I walked into the darkened movie theater and saw Christopher Reeves flying as Superman. That moment, that magic of falling in love, is branded into my memory forever. As a red-blooded woman how could I ignore those piercing gorgeous blue eyes, that muscular yet sleek all-male body. Then there was his dark sexy hair, the very heroic shape of his face. He became Superman for me.
Truthfully, I never thought I’d fall for a comic book hero. Never. Now, I have two ER novels that harken back to that moment of seeing Christopher Reeves as Superman. Destiny is often a strange critter I contend, since Christopher Reeves turned out to be a real life hero.
My hero in BLACK CAT BEAUTY, Devon Zant, is a rising movie star who plays Super Ace, a superhero similar to Superman. His secret, he really does possess the powers of a superman because he’s from another world where such powers are normal. I can tell you this story was a whole lot of fun to write!
My heroes in HER INSATIABLE DARK HEROES, coming soon from Siren-BookStrand, have survived the catastrophic weather wars on their world. About ten percent of the remaining population begin to have superpowers in conjunction with the arrival of the Harbinger, a blue star seen through the ash and haze of their devastated planet-world. This particular story was much darker to write because in this world, the characters are struggling to survive and to continue the slow recovery of their bay city, Chrontropolis.
Okay, how about you? Do you have a favorite superhero/superheroine, or favorites? A moment when you fell in love?
Building the Future in a Romance
Greetings everyone, I’m so glad to be one of Lindsay’s Romantics.
To launch into my topic, when I first began writing fantasy/paranormal romances, most of the stories were set on OtherWorlds, or in OtherRealms. This often meant building worlds that were more advanced. However, I didn’t tackle the future on dear old Earth until a few years ago when I penned my first futuristic, a 17,000 word story set in the year, 2016. The challenge I set for myself was to move ahead ten years, based on what I’d already researched and knew about the current trends shaping our world.
Just as I adore learning about history, and understanding the dynamics which created all the various cultures throughout history, I’m also an avid fan of the future. This fascination with the future began back in first grade with the Weekly Reader ~ flying cars, ray guns and homes run by robotic systems.
Sadly, for me, the future as I dreamed it growing up has not come about. I see no flying car on my rooftop landing port. I see no Rosie the Robot in charge of all the domestic chores in my beautifully organized airy home. Yep, no ray gun on my hip ready to be whipped out in case of a space alien invasion, or a bad guy.
What’s a girl author to do? Either write the future as she would have it be. Or, write the future that is on the way as a fictional, hopefully entertaining romance.
Below is the opening excerpt of my first attempt at an Earth futuristic. I offer it for two reasons. One, I’m proud of the story, regardless of how someone else might criticize it. Two, I offer hope that your first effort at writing a futuristic romance doesn’t have to be perfect. You simply have to start, one word, one idea at a time.
Queen, and My Captive
“Give it up, ladies! And a few gentlemen. For the Spice Gals! Over sixty is the new Sexy in the new millennium. Here they are!” Marilyn introduced, a drama wave of her arm.
Dressed in lust-chic for the over Sixties’ crowd – Sinnamon Spice, Scarlett Spice and Rosethorn Spice sashayed, staying balanced on top of their neon-flashing platform shoes. They took center stage at the Crone Dome, a tiny illegal nightclub. In the middle of old decaying cornfields, it was reminiscent of a twenties’ speakeasy.
Performing the hip sassy moves of their much younger days, flirting with Mae West smiles, the Spice Gals sang.
Men! What are they good for? Absolutely nothin’
Say it again!
Men! What are they good for? Absolutely nothin’
Men! Oh no, there’s got to be a better way – Yeah
What are they good for
Men have caused every test
Among all the woman generations
Seduction then destruction
Who wants to live – why
Men! What are they good for? Absolutely nothin’
Say it again!
Men! What are they good for? Absolutely nothin’
Yeah – Men – I despise
Cos’ it means destruction of innocent women’s lives
Men mean tears
To millions of women now
When they leave to lust and fight
No care for their wives
I said – Men! They’re the enemy of all womankind
No point of families
Cos’ you’re a cheatin’ man
No – not one more time – pow
No – not one more time – pow
Men have shattered
Many a young woman’s dreams
We’ve got no place for true love today
They say we must marry and have children
But, Goddess Above, there’s got be a better way
Marriage ain’t nothin’ but a heartbreaker
Men!
Friend only to the one-night hooker
Men!
Men!
Men! – Time to neuter – pow
Pow Pow
What are they good for ...
After a ragtag high kick routine, the Spice Gals struck provocative poses. Smiling into the crude harsh stage lights, they appreciated the enthusiastic whoops, the applause from the other over-sixty gal performers. A few whistling men included.
“Fun, fun.” Sinnamon euphoric smiled.
The Spice Gals strutted to their table – a creaky antique, splintering underneath. They sat as the next old gal singers were introduced.
“Moo!” Scarlett half-shouted. She saucy grinned at David, the twenties’ son of Marilyn – who insisted he ‘enjoyed’ serving at the Crone Dome.
“Three Moo Mocha Malts comin’ up!” he shouted back, his gaze blatantly running over Rosethorn.
~~~~~~

One thing to remember, which I’m certain is obvious to everyone, but I’ll say it anyway... knowing the past is crucial to creating the future, or the old adage, history repeats itself. For example, while Star Wars, the epic movies and books created/directed by George Lucas, is considered to be the hero’s journey ala space opera, or cowboys in space, it is also based on Hitler’s rise to power, the true history. Therefore, without the use of actual historical events, a terrifically successful series of movies would never have come about.

One reason I love writing futuristic romance is because I can let my imagination race free and wild. Yes, I have to keep my free-spirited muse within the constraints of the world I am building, logic is equal to imagination when penning a futuristic in my opinion... still, the process gives me a sense of freedom that sends fun tingles down to my soul. And that’s another reason I write in the futuristic subgenre, it’s fun. It’s also darn hard work, pulling everything together in a logical manner that creates the fully realized culture, or cultures of a world, or worlds.

Currently, I have three futuristic romance novels published. Of course, they are a fusion of several paranormal genres because it all goes with the territory I write about.
Since I prefer the fun side of being an author... gee, what a surprise... I thought I’d talk about one of the funnest *yes, you can use non-words and make up words* about building the future in each one.

In RED LIONESS TAMED it’s the year 3051, and the story takes place in space. The heroine, Sun Rocket, a red lioness shifter, lives on a Mars moon, when she’s not chasing down the bad shifter cats. In our current Earth time, there’s all sorts of news about designer genes and genetic manipulation. Well, what happens when all the those hidden-from-the-public experiments came to fruition? Already human DNA is being inserted into animals, and the Top Secret rumor is, animal DNA is being inserted into humans. Yep, my Sun Rocket’s genetic heritage includes Big Cat ancestors, as well as a feline race.

WHEN A GOOD ANGEL FALLS, is my 2012 futuristic about the end of the Mayan Calendar. Tons of professorial research has been done on the mystical mysterious date of December 21, 2012, which equals the tons of educated speculation ~ which only continues and increases in fervor. But what really happens on that day? Creating that scenario was most definitely fun, intense and challenging. Maya Toga Days, complete with a replica of the Kukulcan Temple pyramid, yep I tickled myself creating that LA party.

MURDER BY HAIR SPRAY IN GARDENIA, NEW ATLANTIS takes place in 2051, on the risen land of Atlantis. Talk about a chance to create a better future on Earth. And I use every opportunity while balancing Sheriff Kaylpso and Fed Agent Zryphus’ hunt for the notorious and colorful Hair Spray Killer. However, world-building the town of Gardenia, New Atlantis until it became one of the characters... way cool for me. And I hope the readers enjoy their time spent in that *Andy Griffith of Mayberry meets the far future* small town.
