She Rides...rides again!

Adult Read - Romantic Suspense
Not suitable for those under the age of 18. *Strong language
She Rides by Adelle Laudan
Available on Amazon in print & ebook

Missy heads out on her vintage motorcycle for what proves to be a ride of a lifetime. Every new road brings with it new friends, new experiences and even a sexy romp with a tattoo artist. It's summers' end when Missy rides into the small town of Waverly for Bike Week, and  sets sight on the most beautiful man she's ever seen on two wheels. Tommy marks the beginning of many hot, steamy nights. Is he Missy's, 'happy ever after', or is there a twist around the next bend in the road, nobody saw coming?

Originally She Rides & Mystified were written under the pseudonym, Elle Laudan. When it came time to renew my contract, I decided to publish both books on my own. Since then, the response has been incredible.
This is definitely the time for authors to take chances as far a self-publishing goes. I have self-published almost all of my titles now, giving me the freedom to set lucrative prices, which is what it takes to compete in the ebook industry. I can honestly say I made the right choice when I look at my sales. At this rate, I'll have sold as many copies in the first two weeks, than I did over the past 2+ years under Elle Laudan.

Here's a short excerpt from She Rides. I hope I entice you to buy my book!

The Twilight Motel, a serious dive with rooms lined up in a horseshoe design and a small diner set in the center. Missy pulled up to the office, and several men at the diner bar turned to check her out through a nicotine-stained window.
Good thing I’m not hungry.
Missy shivered in disgust and kept Lady idling, in case she needed to make a quick getaway. A door banged shut, and a middle-aged man with dark, slicked back hair and a cigarette hanging from his mouth strutted across the asphalt.
He whistled long and low as his gaze traveled the length of Lady. “That sure is one purty motor sickle.”
Missy feigned a smile and tried to ignore the brazen once-over he gave her next.
“Hello there.” His brow arched suggestively. “Are you lookin’ for a room for the night? Just for yourself, or do you have the boyfriend joining you?”
It took great resolve not to vomit all over his Velcro runners. “I’m really very tired. I need a hot shower and a bed for the night. How much?”
“Jim” took her fifty bucks and gave her a key for the room beside the office. His hand lingered in hers a few seconds longer than necessary. “If you feel like some company, come on over and I’ll buy ya a beer.”
Missy offered a cursory nod and straddled Lady. She rode up the sidewalk and parked as close to the window as possible. It took a couple of tries before the key turned in the lock and she opened the door.
Her stomach heaved, and she stumbled back. “Holy crap!” With one hand over her mouth, the other waved the putrid stench away. Never in her life had she smelled anything like it. Bug spray, cigarette smoke, air fresheners and God only knew what else, all rolled into one.
Once the green fog disappeared, the room looked reasonably clean, and the bare mattress held a full set of bedding, still wrapped in plastic. For the first time in her life, she was actually grateful at having to make her own bed.
The decision to stay or go depended on the state of the bathroom. With the cuff of her sweatshirt pulled over her hand, she opened the door and flicked on the light.
Thank God.
In contrast to the motel in general, the bathroom sparkled. Exhausted and relieved she didn’t have to look for another room, she sniffled. In a matter of minutes, her bag sat at the end of the bed and Lady was locked up, with a nylon cover over her sleeping bag and the other things strapped to her backrest.
With the bed made and a vanilla-scented candle lit, she stripped off her clothes on the way to the bathroom. A shower never felt so good. She lathered her body from her toes to her neck and washed her hair twice with raspberry-scented shampoo and creme rinse. It wasn’t until the water ran cold that she reluctantly stepped out of the stall and wrapped an oversized towel around her body.
Cigar smoke alerted her to company on the other side of the door. Missy double-checked her hold on the towel and pushed open the bathroom door. Her eyes widened to find the owner, Jim, sat on the edge of the bed, smoking, in nothing more than boxer shorts and black socks. His cheap cigar hung out of the corner of his mouth.
“Well now, don’t you smell good enough to eat?”
Rage gurgled in the pit of her stomach and exploded. “What the f**k are you doing?”
Jim patted the space on the bed beside him. “Come on now, sweet cheeks. I saw the way you looked at me. Has it been a while since you had any lovin’? Come here and let Big Jim take care of you.” He took the cigar out of his mouth and grabbed a handful of boxer shorts with his freed hand, flashing his yellowed teeth.
“You’ve got ten seconds to get the f**k out of my room before ‘Big Jim’ becomes a trophy for my bike.”
Jim stood up slowly and raised his hands in defense. “Whoa there, little lady. I’m going.”
He stuffed the cigar back in his mouth and inched across the room to the door, not taking his eyes off of her for one second.
Jim paused. “You know, you’re lucky I’m a nice guy. Anyone else would’ve taken what he wanted from a *** tease like you.” He slammed the door shut behind him with such force it rattled the window.
“Erg!” Missy ran to the door, locked it, slid the chain across and took a desk chair and wedged it under the handle for good measure. The nerve of that asshole. Let’s hope he’s not stupid enough to f**k with Lady.
Still, the thought of him in her room while she showered left a bad taste in her mouth. So much for slipping between the sheets naked. There wasn’t a chance in hell of that happening now.
Missy dressed completely and grudgingly stepped back into her boots. Asshole. She yanked the top sheet off the bed and covered a faded armchair before pushing it right up to the window where Lady sat on the other side.
I just need a couple of hours sleep. Then I’ll haul ass out of this dump.
Missy stretched out her legs, leaned her head back and closed her eyes.
This isn’t how I pictured the end of my first day on the road.

Hot new release: HOT WATER

by Maggie Toussaint

My brand new release HOT WATER is the story of a cop and an arson investigator on the trail of a serial arsonist. This romantic suspense is from The Wild Rose Press and is in the KDP program for 90-days in Kindle format prior to its release across all platforms in digital and print on July 12.

HOT WATER is my 5th romantic suspense and 9th published novel, and I just know you're going to love Laurie Ann and Wyatt's story. This is the second book I've set in the small Southern town of Mossy Bog on the Georgia coast.

Here's the book blurb:

Solving Mossy Bog's first fire fatality could net police officer Laurie Ann Dinterman the promotion she desperately wants. When the state arson investigator arrives to take over the case, Laurie Ann is assigned to give the man everything he needs while keeping him alive. The fact he's the sexiest man ever to hit town shouldn't make a difference.

Hot on the trail of a serial arsonist, Wyatt North demands justice for his partner, the arsonist's first victim. He'll find the murderer or die trying--no matter how distracting the tall, lithe figure of his local partner is.

As the investigation zeroes in on a suspect uncomfortably close to Laurie Ann's life, her cop instincts conflict with her feelings for Wyatt. Worse, the arsonist will do anything to protect his identity. Can Laurie Ann accept the truth in time...or will she and Wyatt go up in flames?

--
And to further whet your appetite, here's a PG excerpt featuring this romantic couple:

Laurie Ann bypassed the elevator and hit the stairs. North’s room was on the second floor. He didn’t answer her first knock, so she knocked harder. With each second that ticked by, her nerves pinged. Was he even in his room? Had she lost track of him?

The chief would kill her.

She called Wyatt. Inside his room, a phone began to ring. She didn’t know whether to be relieved or alarmed.

“Hullo.” Sleep roughened his deep voice.

“North, I’m at your door. Lunch, remember?”

“Lunch.” He paused to yawn. “What time is it?”

“High noon. I’m right on time.”

He swore. “Oh, excuse me. I didn’t mean to say that out loud. Give me a second.”

The phone clicked in her ear. She heard rustling inside the room. A few minutes later, he opened the door, and her heart did a funny leap. He’d donned a light pink shirt the same color as hers.

But more impressive than the shirt and the man was the way his eyes warmed at the sight of her. He looked at her like she was breakfast—and lunch.

“We match,” she ventured, hoping to slow the racing of her heart.

His face twitched. “Is that a problem? One of my sisters has this thing about matching clothes. If it bothers you, I can change.”

“You’re fine. I don’t have a problem with your shirt.”

“Where are my manners?” North asked, stepping away from the doorway. “Come in.”

She noticed his tanned feet were bare. They were nice feet with nails blunt cut and slender toes. “I’ll wait out here until you’re ready.”

“I promise to be on good behavior.” He reached for her hand and tugged her gently inside.

The curtains were drawn. The bedside lamp was on. The bed was messy, clothes everywhere, and papers strewn about the room. He moved a briefcase from the chair. “Sit. I’ll be a minute more. I had a late night.”

“Looks like it was quite the event,” she said dryly.

He grinned and reached for a shoe. “Can’t help it. I’m a slob, from start to finish. No matter how much positive reinforcement my parents provided, I developed the habit of spreading my stuff around.”

No one would question a man lived in this room. Maybe that was the point. “Sounds like a nesting instinct.”

“I’m not a girl.”

“I noticed.” Her cheeks heated, and she regretted being so forthright.

“My sisters have nesting instincts. Not me.”

Oh, dear. She’d insulted him. “I apologize. I was thinking that in a large family, spreading your stuff around was a way to stake out your territory.”

His eyes sparked as he stuffed his bare feet in shoes. “Instead of peeing on the furniture?”

She groaned. “I’m going to shut up now.”

“I’m liking this side of you, Dinterman. You crack me up.”

She rose to leave. As long as she cracked him up, that was okay.

Her job was to make sure he didn’t crack up.

Here's a Five-star review for this book as seen on Amazon:

What I like about the Mossy Bog series is that each book concentrates on a different person in Mossy Bog, so the series never gets stale. This one is about Laurie Ann, who made an appearance in another book, and Wyatt, the fire investigator on the trail of a serial arsonist. There are plenty of tense moments and some nice romantic scenes that hold the book together until the penultimate scene when-- Oops, almost gave away the ending, which I never do. Pick up the book and find out for yourselves. You'll enjoy a terrific read. Highly recommended. Polly Iyer, author of MIND GAMES.

Linda Acaster: Ebooks R Us

Back in the days of yore I won a competition and ended up with two historical romances being published by Mills & Boon (Harlequin UK). When I was able I had my rights reverted to me. Better the novels sitting in my drawer than lost in theirs.

Last winter a cross-genre novel Torc of Moonlight finally saw the light of day and Amazon USA opened its DTP e-book publishing arm to non-USA residents. Time, I thought, to dip my toe into indie authoring and ebook my rights-reverted novels, beginning with Hostage of the Heart.

I did masses of research regarding the experience of others, and can recommend The Newbie’s Guide to Publishing blog, not just for the posts but for the knowledge of its commenters. On a read through, e-publishing for the Kindle I didn’t find easy to understand, but Smashwords helpfully offers idiot’s guides as well as multi-formats, including for the Sony e-Reader and the Apple I-Pad. Both devices need spot-on formatting, and also an ISBN dedicated to the ebook, which Smashwords offers free, so I decided to try my test run there.

Taking care not to include the strapline or page number, I scanned my h/backs to create digital files (the paper used for p/backs carries more wood fibre so confuses the scanner). I then re-edited all the phrasing that I’d now never write due to the improvement in my writing skills. Copyright and Title pages are well explained in the guides, as is the preferred formatting. Ignore this at your peril. You are not formatting for a print book, but for a digital file than can be read on anything from a desktop computer to a mobile phone.

I’m a reader who prefers to see the cover as the first page of an ebook, so added mine at the front of the text file. Of course, updating the cover will mean re-uploading the text file, so you take your choice.

The biggest boon to indie e-authoring is the ability to advertise my other ebooks at the end of the novel. Initially I wrote a paragraph on each of my forthcoming titles complete with live links, but decided as a taster to add in the full initial chapter of my second historical Beneath The Shining Mountains.

After checking every line and comma, I uploaded the file to Smashwords and held my breath. It takes surprisingly little time to convert a file to the requested formats, and watching a series of boxes turn green can be riveting. It is at this stage that any likely problems are flagged by the automated system. With that hurdle passed the ebook joins a queue for a human check before going live on the site.

Smashwords offers a running tally via the author’s ‘dashboard’ not only of sales but of number of downloaded samples, which is a wonderful indicator as to the efficacy of a marketing drive. Although I took all the steps very slowly, I found the experience a piece of cake. Not so uploading for the Kindle.

Armed with my ISBN (which Amazon accepts but doesn’t use, allotting its own ASIN) I forayed into Kindle territory via Amazon’s Digital Text Platform

There are lots of user forums and some Q&A guides, but it could do to be a bit more idiot-proof for first-timers. Amazon’s conversion process isn’t as forgiving as that of Smashwords, but it will take Word files, just the same. After altering the Copyright page and checking formatting against the Kindle’s guidelines, the uploading procedure was straightforward enough. However, at the Preview stage I realised that the automated system was grouping short paragraphs (dialogue) and indenting them as a block – a known problem, I gathered from the forums. For some writers, and readers, this wouldn’t be a problem. I’m finicky and want the presentation as good as by any professional publisher.

There’s an option to download the semi converted HTML file and hand edit, but considering what I know about HTML can be written on the back of a postage stamp, for a 71k word script this was a non-starter. One indie author suggests using Open Office and exporting direct as HTML, which Amazon’s DTP system will accept, so I did, but when I got to the Preview stage with this second file I found that all my centring had been left justified. Argh!!

Which brings up the question: how much time do I spend messing about with these things? As long as it took to contact Jim & Zetta Brown who convert Word files for the e-publishing industry on both sides of the Atlantic. Jim suggested a PRC file was likely to solve the problem. And it did. I shall not mess about for the rest of my books, simply go to him first.

The Kindle version went live last Friday, so the marketing starts now:

Hostage of the Heart - a mediaeval romantic suspense set on the English/Welsh borders in 1066.
When her kin refuse to pay her ransom, dare a battle hostage give her heart and her life to a warrior-knight shielding dark secrets of his own?
Heat level: sweet. 71,000 words. $1.99
For the Kindle  /  For all other formats

To read the opening chapter: http://lindaacaster.blogspot.com/, or download the samples direct from Kindle or Smashwords.

If you haven’t been bored witless, return tomorrow for a laugh about the making of its cover, through the original publisher's branding to my own first effort.
